Timo Werner under the microscope.

RB Leipzig have “hinted” that star forward Timo Werner could sign for Spurs but unfortunately for Tottenham fans there’s more to it than what meets the eye.

The claim follows reports from Sport Bild (h/t The Daily Mail) on Wednesday that Liverpool are interested in signing the German striker this summer, following constant speculation linking the 23-year-old with a move to Anfield.

Following the report, social media went wild with excitement about Liverpool’s reported interest in the player.

Responding to a Tweet reporting the news, Leipzig’s official account replied by mocking the story and referencing Tottenham Hotspur (see below).

The Bundesliga side’s brilliant reply on social media is, of course, referring to the fact that Leipzig will face Spurs in London, next week, as the two sides face off in the Champions League last 16 first-leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Werner heading to London, Jose returns from Munich

Whilst Timo Werner may be heading to London, albeit briefly, Jose Mourinho has recently returned from Germany.

The 57-year-old had travelled to Munich over the weekend to watch Tottenham’s Champions League opponents earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich, and the Spurs boss will now focus on preparing his side to overcome Timo Werner and his RB Leipzig teammates in what is set to be a mouthwatering two-legged Champions League encounter.

Tottenham will hope to be spurred on from defeating German opposition at the same stage of the competition last year, which then saw the North London side go on to be within touching distance of glory.
