How did Tottenham Hotspur miss out on Bruno Fernandes?
Bruno Fernandes has hit the ground running at Old Trafford. The January signing has looked at home from the get-go as he continues to put up one impressive performance after the other.
It is exactly the kind of player Tottenham could have done with as we aim to finish in the top four. The 25-year-old has scored three goals and two assists in just six appearances for the Red Devils so far.
It becomes a case of ‘what if’ as the impressive Portuguese international was constantly linked with a move to North London last summer and also in January. Unfortunately, we couldn’t agree on a deal and United get to reap the benefits of the player’s talents.
According to Football.London, the Spurs hierarchy view the signings of Gedson Fernandes and Giovani Lo Celso as replacements for Christian Eriksen.
Tottenham could have made a move for Bruno Fernandes had Eriksen left in the summer, however, the Dane left only at the end of the January window. By then, Manchester United were close to a deal and eventually went on to sign the playmaker.
Spurs were in discussions with Sporting Lisbon with Fernandes even going as far as to admit that a deal had been agreed on between the clubs. Speaking to the club’s official website (h/t Football.London), Sporting president Frederico Varandas revealed that Spurs submitted a €45million offer with a further €20million in add-ons.
Varandas, however, did not believe that the add-ons were achievable and rejected the offer. The add-ons were dependent on Spurs winning the league and the Champions League.
“Finding these goals difficult, I understood not to accept.”

According to Zero Zero (h/t Football.London), Fernandes had earlier spoken of his desire to talk to Tottenham and being excited by the project at Spurs. Unfortunately, it was not to be and we can only look on and wonder the effect he could have had on us had the made the move to North London instead.
