Jose Mourinho insists summer rebuild is not required
According to Metro, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has stated that he does not believe a summer rebuild is required at the club. These comments come at the back of Spurs’ exit from the UEFA Champions League after the 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig.
The Germans followed up with their victory in the first leg with a comprehensive dismantling of Mourinho’s side. A double by Marcel Sabitzer followed by a late goal by Emil Forsberg ensured that the scoreline did not flatter the Germans.
It was an unceremonious way for last season’s finalists to bow out, in a season that promised so much.
Mourinho stressed on the quality of the players out injured. They will return in the coming months, giving his team better options going into the new season. However, he indicated that the European Championships this summer could have a say in Tottenham’s transfer plans.
“I don’t think we will have a big rebuild, this summer unless something happens during the Euros”
The best given the circumstances
Speaking about the game, he candidly revealed that in spite of his mask of optimism going into the second leg, the task was always going to be difficult given the quality of the opposition and Tottenham’s injury crisis.
He laid praise on Julian Nagelsmann’s side, who dominated Spurs in most facets on the pitch. Not only were the Germans stronger and faster but they also made sure they took full advantage of Tottenham’s mistakes.
Mourinho admitted that the best team on the night won. He was cryptic in his criticism of his players and admitted that they gave what they could, given the circumstances.
He openly backed the players and acknowledged that a number of them were at their limits. He believes this limited them from reaching their potential.
“It’s hard for me to cope with players who cannot express their potential, not those who are at their limit. I am with the boys.”
