Dele Alli apologizes to fans following defeat against RB Leipzig

According to BT Sport (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has apologized to fans who travelled to Germany to watch the side get beaten 3-0. He admitted that the performance wasn’t good enough as the North Londoners bowed out 4-0 on aggregate.

It was an abject performance by Tottenham as Leipzig dominated from start to finish. Alli started up front for Spurs and did his best in spite of trying circumstances. He is one of the few Tottenham players to have come out of the game with their reputations intact.

The 23-year-old admitted that his side failed to show the fighting quality after Leipzig opened the scoring. Hugo Lloris was unable to keep out Marcel Sabitzer’s long-range shot as the Germans raced to an early lead. The night got much worse for Spurs as Sabitzer once again popped up to put his side two up in the 21st minute.

The loss is Tottenham’s 5th in 6 games since the winter break. Alli admitted that the confidence in the squad is low at the moment. Tottenham’s last win came against Aston Villa on the 16th of February.

“It’s devastating. We had belief before the game and we didn’t perform”

He admitted that Tottenham faced a daunting task following Leipzig’s second goal. Alli went on to add that his side failed to show the required maturity in the face of adversity.

“It’s hard to come back from those two goals. We had to show our maturity and fight and we didn’t do that.”

Tottenham are suffering from an injury crisis and has a number of important players out. Alli, however, refuses to use it as an excuse and claims that the replacement players should have done better.

He then apologized to the fans before going on to add that it has been a disappointing season for the club. In a rather alarming tone, he conveyed that the morale within the squad has all but evaporated.

“We apologize to the fans, to go out and lose like that, they deserve better.”
