Jan Vertonghen ‘s house raided by masked robbers

According to the Express, (h/t Daily Mail), the house of Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen was raided by four masked robbers while the player was away with the team at Leipzig.

According to the report, the police are on the lookout for four masked men who were armed as they broke into the player’s family home. Vertonghen’s wife Sophie De Vries and their two children were inside the home at around 8 pm when the quartet broke into the property and demanded they hand over their valuables and cash.

The robbers wielded machetes and knives in what has been a harrowing experience for the footballer’s young family.

The report further states that the player’s wife did as she was told and the robbers carried out a search before decamping with electronic items. Thankfully, neither Vertonghen’s wife nor kids were hurt in the incident.

The police conducted a scene examination and also enquired from the neighbours to warn people and seek answers. Investigations are underway as they aim to identify the perpetrators.

A police spokesperson confirmed that they responded to a burglary complaint on the morning of March 10 at the player’s residence. They confirmed that a number of items were missing and that none was injured.

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman voiced the club’s support to the player and his family, and has urged people with any information to come forward and share it with the relevant authorities.

“We have been supporting Jan and his family through this terribly traumatic time and we encourage anyone who has any information to come forward to help the police with their investigation.”

A troubling trend

This is the third such incident involving a footballer this season. Mamadou Sakho’s house was robbed earlier in the season while Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinic had to fight off armed robbers.

The article goes on to state that a number of organized gangs are aware of where top-flight players live and target their houses when they are away on matchdays.

Let’s hope Vertonghen and his family recover from this harrowing experience and nothing untoward like this happen to them in the future. The perpetrators will hopefully be brought to justice soon and made to answer for their crime.
