Three Tottenham players primed to perform better next season

It has been a disappointing season on many levels for Tottenham. Starting from Mauricio Pochettino’s exit to the recent steady decline in form under Jose Mourinho, things haven’t gone according to plans for our club.

Injuries to key players has played a part in our current predicament, while quite a few players haven’t been at the top of their game. However, with Mourinho set to get a full pre-season to work with the players before next season, there should be an upturn of form.

And here, we take a look at three such players who should be able to step up when the next campaign kicks off;

Japhet Tanganga

Mourinho isn’t someone known to throw his backing behind young players from youth setup, but he has done that with Japhet Tanganga at Tottenham this season and it has had a positive outcome. The 20-year-old defender has repaid the manager’s faith with some reliable performances in his eleven first-team appearances so far.

And things should only get better for the England U-20 international going forward. Working a full pre-season with the manager and the first-team should help him understand better what is expected of him. More clarity on which position he will be used in should also help improve his game. Much like Scott McTominay did at Manchester United under Mou.

Tanguy Ndombele

Signed for a club-record £55m fee from Olympique Lyon, Ndombele has endured a stop-start season at Tottenham. Injuries haven’t helped his cause one bit, but more was expected of him when the club invested him so heavily last summer. The 23-year-old, of late, has faced a lot of criticism from Mourinho and some section of fans as well. But, that should change next season.

It is well-known that most foreign players find it adapt to English football in their first year. But, there is no denying the quality that Ndombele possesses. The midfielder had a couple of outstanding seasons prior to his transfer to Spurs and has shown glimpses of that in his 27 appearances so far, in which he has a tally of 2 goals and 4 assists.

And, with more time under the manager to work on his game, the Frenchman should be able to bring out his best next season.

Ryan Sessegnon

Another exciting prospect that joined our club last summer, Sessegnon, too has had an injury-riddled season, limiting him to just 12 first-team appearances during which he has managed a return of a solitary goal and an assist. The 19-year-old is rated highly by Mourinho though, with the Portuguese comparing him to former England international Ashley Cole.

Sessegnon showcased his talents in the last season with Fulham, providing evidence that he can cut it out at this level. With Danny Rose likely to be offloaded permanently this summer, the teenager should be able to get more regular opportunities next season. Provided he stays fit, we should see the Englishman fare much better than he has in the ongoing campaign.
