Not Kane – Liverpool star picks Tottenham hotshot in his unique five-a-side team

Virgil van Dijk prefers to play alongside Heung-Min Son over Harry Kane

With football currently suspended, footballers have time to follow other pursuits while self-isolating at home. Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk has made use of his time to pick a five a side team comprising of just his opponents. (h/t

One Spurs star makes the cut in a team dominated by Manchester City players. Considering Liverpool and City have had a long-running rivalry, it isn’t surprising.

What concerns us is the identity of the lone Spurs star. Surprisingly, the Dutchman has gone for Heung-Min Son over our ace striker Harry Kane.

Hgeung-Min Son came in for high praise

Heung-Min Son was praised by Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk has faced Tottenham nine times in his career for both Southampton and Liverpool. Kane has scored four times against him while Son has managed to do so twice. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The 27-year-old lavished praise on our South Korean star as he went on to justify his selection. He praised Son’s power and pace while also complimenting his ability to make things hard for a defender. High praise indeed coming from the player widely considered the best defender in the world today.

“He’s quick, he’s strong, he goes out there to make life hell on the pitch for a defender.”

He also attributed Son’s ability to finish with either foot as a reason for the Korean playmaker making the cut.

Coming to the striker, Van Dijk prefers Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang over Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero. The Gabonese international is a goalscoring phenom, but his inclusion comes as a surprise given how ineffective he has been against Liverpool.

Heung-Min Son made the cut but Harry Kane didn't

Harry Kane missed out to his Spurs teammate

Aubemeyang has scored 0.52 goals per game throughout his career while Kane averages 0.57. Although we do not dispute Son’s position in the team, we feel Kane has been done hard by.

The other players selected by Van Dijk include the Manchester City trio of  Ederson, Aymeric Laporte and Kevin De Bruyne.

Son is a talented player who has developed into truly a world-class player for us. It is good to see him get the recognition he deserves, especially from the best in the business.
