Tottenham Hotspur on alert as Nelson Semedo contract extension at Barcelona breaks down

According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur have been given hope in their pursuit of Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo.

The Portuguese right-back’s contract negotiations with Barcelona have broken down, giving us an opening to take advantage of.

Semedo’s contract at the Nou Camp runs until 2022. He is reluctant to pen an extension given his role as a backup to La Masia graduate Sergi Roberto. The Catalans are, however, keen on keeping the player and are willing to offer him an extension until 2024.

Tottenham’s hopes of signing him will be further augmented by the news of the player’s agent Jorge Mendes keen to see his client move to England. Mendes is also the agent of Spurs boss Jose Mourinho which could give us an edge over Manchester City, who are also keen on the defender (h/t The Sun).

New team, same problem?

Mendes has, however, hinted at a swap deal involving Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo, who is another client of Mendes. Kyle Walker is the first choice right-back at City and it doesn’t make sense for Semedo to move to the Etihad if he is to play a backup once again.

Spurs, on the other hand, can offer him more playtime, given our lack of a reliable option in the position. Serge Aurier has been Mourinho’s preferred choice. But the Ivorian international blows far too hot and cold to be considered reliable.

Semedo will add solidity to our right flank

Better going forward than defending, he does have the unnecessary urge to give away unwanted fouls. He had recently commented on his desire to return to PSG. This could be seen as a sign of his lack of long-term commitment to us. (h/t Sun)

Semedo is a capable player who can contribute to both the defence and attack. His addition will bring a much-needed solidity to our right flank. Given our troubles at the back this season, a change of personnel may be in order.
