Tottenham Hotspur leading the race for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star), Tottenham Hotspur are in the lead to sign Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic. This comes after the North London side put together what they believe is a worthy offer for the Croatian.

The 32-year-old has been an integral part of the Catalan club’s success since making the move to the Nou Camp in 2014. With his contract expiring in 2021, he has been linked with a move away this summer.

The player, however, is keen on extending his stay in Catalunya. As of yet, there has been no agreement between him and Barcelona regarding the same.

Barcelona are keen to let go of a number of players including Rakitic. They would rather sell him in the upcoming window rather than lose him for free a year down the line.

Apart from us, Sevilla, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the Croatian international. We have, however, prepared the strongest offer among the lot and have jumped to the head of the queue.

He has enjoyed a trophy-laden stay at Barcelona, winning 12 major honours. In his six years with the Catalan giants, he has made 299 appearances and has scored 34 goals and 41 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Rakitic is, however, keen on winning more trophies and feels he can add to his collection if he stays at the Nou Camp. He has played against us twice in the Champions League group stages last season. Spurs fans will not have forgotten his wonder strike against us at home.

The midfielder will add both experience and quality to our midfield. This is something that has been lacking at times this season.

The Croatian has played in some of football’s biggest games alongside some of the best in the game. He would act as both an inspiration and a mentor to the younger players.
