Tottenham Hotspur fall behind in the race to sign Joe Hugill

According to the Sun, Manchester United have moved ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Sunderland wonderkid Joe Hugill.

Considered to be one of Sunderland’s brightest prospects, the 16-year-old is a regular for the club’s Under-23 side this season. In spite of playing against players older than him, Hugill has scored two goals in three appearances.

Both his goals came against West Ham United in what was eventually a 4-2 loss for the Black Cats. He also impressed for the Under-18 side, for whom he scored a hat-trick in the FA Cup victory against Shrewsbury Town last November.

The news will come as a hammer blow to Spurs who sent top scout Ian Broomfield to watch Hugill in the days leading up to the lockdown. United have, however, taken advantage of the circumstances and are now in pole position to land the player.

Hugill could become the latest young academy talent to leave the Black Cats. Players who have done so before including Sam Greenwood, who joined Arsenal, and Logan Pye who went to Manchester United.

With the coronavirus pandemic set to impact club finances, Tottenham looks likely to be one of the teams hard hit. It’s only us who have to repay the stadium debt and also pay the outstanding transfer fees.

Given the circumstances, our ability to compete in the transfer market will be hindered. An alternative is to take a long-term approach involving a youth revolution. It appears as if we have been trumped even in this category.

The Spurs rebuild looks to be a long and arduous road, not made easy by off-field events. With us currently looking all the more likely to miss out on the Champions League, the implications could be huge.

Jose Mourinho has a fight on his hands. It is time he reminded everyone that he still is the special one.
