Tottenham favourites to sign PSG defender Thomas Meunier

Tottenham are in pole position to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier, who will be out of contract with the Ligue 1 club at the end of the season. (h/t Metro)

The 28-year-old Meunier has been with PSG for almost four years, having signed in the summer of 2016. The Belgian international has made 128 appearances so far, scoring 13 goals and creating 21 more.

With his contract running out at the end of the season, Meunier has attracted a lot of suitors heading into the summer transfer window. And Tottenham are among the host of clubs keen on signing him. (h/t Metro)

Recent reports had claimed that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho had personally spoken to Meunier, to convince him to join our club. And, now, as per the report from Metro, which cites French outlet Le Parisien, Spurs are the front-runners to secure the 28-year-old’s signing.

The right-back slot has been a problematic one for Tottenham this season. The club allowed Kieran Trippier to leave last summer, but did not bring in a replacement. Academy prospect Kyle Walker-Peters was then loaned out in January. This left us with Serge Aurier as the only senior right-back in the squad.

While Aurier has done well in the attacking facets of the game, the Ivory Coast international’s defending has been calamitous on several occasions.

Jose Mourinho has reverted to using Japhet Tanganga at right-back on occasions. And while the youngster has done fairly well, he is not a natural full-back. So, bringing in a new right-back in the summer becomes imperative for the club.

And Meunier, given his experience at the top level, would be a fine addition to the ranks. The 28-year-old was a member of the Belgium national team that finished third in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The report also adds that Borussia Dortmund are our toughest competitors in the chase for Meunier. Hopefully, the club convince the Belgian to join us with a good contract offer.
