Tottenham Hotspur to enter the race for Kalidou Koulibaly, but there is a catch
According to Italian publication II Mattino (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are set to rival Manchester United for Kalidou Koulibaly.
However, the club will have to meet two major obstacles in their path. This includes Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis’ asking fee of £89million as well as the defender’s wages worth £5million per year. Given our current financial situation, it could prove to be a bridge too far.
Such an investment is not without its risks considering the player will turn 29 in three weeks’ time. Any hope of a compromise is unlikely. De Laurentiis has remained firm these past two years and has turned down offers from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. (h/t Express)
No club is exempt from the financial crisis that is plaguing the sport. With money at a premium, loan and swap deals could be the deal of the hour. Tottenham already have to repay their stadium debt while also having to negotiate outstanding transfer fee.
The defence is an area that the club needs to add to. Jan Vertonghen’s exit will leave a spot open while the more we watch Serge Aurier, the more we realize we need to replace him.

There is no doubting Koulibaly’s ability. He would be an incredible signing who will go immediately into the first-team. However, he won’t come cheap. Spurs need more than one player to fill the gaps in the squad. The club is better off looking elsewhere.
