Tottenham star Eric Dier set for a new contract
According to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, versatile Tottenham Hotpsur star Eric Dier is on the verge of signing a new contract with the club, with talks ongoing between the two parties.
Eric Dier, 26, arrived at Tottenham from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon back in 2014. The England international had grown into a key part of the team under Mauricio Pochettino. But form and fitness issues this term had seen him drop down the pecking order.
Back into the mix of things after Jose Mourinho took charge of the club last November. Dier was entering the final year of his contract. This had led to speculations over his future, with London rivals West Ham United taking an interest in him.
However, Romano has now claimed that Dier is in talks with Spurs over a new deal and could be on the verge of signing it imminently.
This shouldn’t come as a major surprise considering that manager Jose Mourinho is an admirer of the England international. The Portuguese had tried to sign him back during his stint at Manchester United and brought him right back into the side after replacing Pochettino.
Dier hasn’t been at his best this season, but his ability to play at centre-half as well as a defensive midfielder can be seen as an asset.
The 26-year-old has largely been used as a No.6 during his time at the club. But he recently iterated his desire of playing in the backline. It might turn out be a good move given how inconsistent our defenders have been this term.
