Tottenham Hotspur open contract negotiations with Eric Dier
According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have entered into contract negotiations with Eric Dier.
It shows a remarkable turnaround for the 26-year-old English international. Initially having fallen down the pecking order, he has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts under Mourinho. Capable of playing as a defender and a defensive midfielder, his versatility has been termed as an asset by Jose Mourinho. (h/t Football.london)
Dier’s current club expires next summer. According to the report, Daniel Levy has approved negotiations over an extension. This report comes in the aftermath of an update provided by reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claimed that the Englishman was close to penning a new deal.
A proactive approach is needed in dealing with players’ contracts. The likes of Chrisitan Eriksen and now Jan Vertonghen were allowed to run down their contracts. The latter just has days to go before his agreement with Tottenham comes to an end.
By renegotiating Dier’s deal, we hope the club takes a pre-emptive approach rather than a reactionary one. Spurs have a lot to benefit from extending the Englishman’s stay.
For one he is a Mourinho favorite. The Portuguese tactician was keen to sign him during his stint at Manchester United. To say that Dier’s performances have picked up under Mourinho is an understatement.
Secondly, his versatility offers us a readymade option in defence. Dier’s ability to play in the rearguard will come as a blessing for a team in need of a defensive rebuild. With Jan Vertonghen looking likely to leave, Dier helps plug a major gap in the squad.

Dier joined Tottenham from Sporting Lisbon in 2014. He has since made 235 appearances while scoring 11 goals for the club. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Keeping Dier will not leave us at a disadvantage. If anything, it is likely to give us more options going into next season.
