Eric Dier relishing the opportunity of playing at centre-back again
In a recent interview with the club’s official website, Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has claimed that he is relishing the opportunity of playing in the centre-back role.
Dier, 26, has been at the club since 2014, having arrived from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon. For almost the entirety of his time at the club, he has been used as a defensive midfielder – a position he has made his own for the England national team as well.
However, earlier this year, in an interview with the Evening Standard, Dier claimed that he sees himself playing as a centre-back moving forward in his career. In fact reports claimed that him signing a new contract with the club would hinge on the guarantee that manager Jose Mourinho uses him in the backline.
Dier has been granted his wishes as Mourinho has deployed him as a centre-back in our last six matches. He featuerd at the heart of the defence in both our matches since the resumption of the campaign. And the conceded penalty against Manchester United aside, the England international has given a very good account of himself.
In fact, he was one of our best performers in the last game against West Ham United, which saw club legend Graham Roberts hail him for his display. Talking to the club’s website about his new role, Dier expressed his pleasure at recent performances. He insisted that he can excel continuing playing at the heart of the defence.
“I’m really happy to be getting my chance to try and prove myself there. And I feel like I can really excel there. I can still improve on lots of things but I’m happy we got the clean sheet against West Ham.”

Dier’s contract with the club expires in a year. Reports have claimed that the defender is close to signing a new deal. Hopefully, he carries on in this vein of form and helps us finish in the top four.
