Tottenham submit £27.2m bid for Lille star Gabriel Magalhaes

According to a report from Fichajes.net (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have made a £27.2m bid to secure the signing of Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes from Ligue 1 side Lille.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a fine 2019/20 campaign with Lille, which has seen him attract interest from a host of European clubs. Tottenham are among the interested parties along with Arsenal and Everton, while Serie A side Napoli are also keen. (h/t The Sun)

There have been reports claiming that Napoli have already reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 side for the transfer of Gabriel. However, Tottenham had been credited with making a late swoop in order to securing the Brazilian’s services. (h/t The Sun)

And now, the aforementioned report claims that Tottenham have indeed launched an offer the 22-year-old Gabriel. The bid is reportedly worth £27.2m – an improved offer on Napoli’s £20m offer for the Brazilian.

It is no secret that Tottenham are in need of defensive cover heading into the next season. Jan Vertonghen’s contract is on the verge of expiry, while the rest of the centre-backs haven’t impressed altogether either. Gabriel, to that end, would be a good option for the club.

The 22-year-old featured 34 times across all competitions this term, bagging one goal, helping Lille to a fourth place finish, while also leading them to the joint third-best defensive record in Ligue 1.

It remains to be seen if there is any truth to these reports of Tottenham entering the fray with a late bid for the defender. If we are able to snatch him from under the noses of Napoli, it would represent quite the coup.
