Toby Alderweireld reacts to Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 against Everton
Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has insisted that the club’s 1-0 win over Everton on Monday night in the Premier League was down to a solid team performance. (h/t TottenhamHotspur.com)
It was Alderweireld’s first appearance since the restart of the season last month. The Belgian has had to wait on the bench with Jose Mourinho preferring the partnership of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier for the first three matches against Manchester United, West Ham United and Sheffield United.
However, a disappointing outcome against the Blades in which we ended up conceding three soft goals, Sanchez was dropped for Alderweireld against Everton on Monday. And the Belgian instantly brought a sense of assurance at the back, helping the team secure a clean sheet, something that has been a rare sight this season.
Alderweireld’s presence at the back certainly helped in that end. But the Belgian international has insisted that the shut-out was down to a solid team performance. He also had special praise for teammate and centre-back partner Eric Dier.
“I’m a small piece of the puzzle and I’m happy to contribute. We need everyone in the team to get good results, like we showed today. Eric is doing very well. We have a big squad and everyone has to be ready to play when needed. We have a lot of games coming up in a short space of time, so we need everyone.”
This season has been woeful in terms of defensive performances. However, two clean sheets in the last four matches do offer some sort of hope. But it will be very important for the team to build on the performance against Everton if we are to stand a chance to earn a place in European football next season.
