£100k-a-week veteran Tottenham star in line for a new contract

Hugo Lloris set to be handed a new contract by Tottenham

According to a report from ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur captain and first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris could be handed a new contract by the club.

The 33-year-old Lloris has been with Tottenham for over eight years now, having arrived back in 2012 from Olympique Lyon. So far, he has racked up 325 appearances for the club, keeping 112 clean sheets in the process.

The 2019/20 began on a difficult note for Lloris, with an elbow injury sidelining him for a lengthy spell. His form dipped following his return to full fitness. However, since the restart of the season, the 33-year-old rediscovered his best form and ended the campaign on a strong note.

Lloris finished the 2019/20 term with six clean sheets from 21 Premier League appearances, conceding 21 goals. His form helped us finish sixth in the table and qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

Lloris still has two years left on his current £100,000-a-week contract with Tottenham Hotspur. And while the veteran star will be turning 34 years old later this year, the club are reportedly planning to hand him a new contract.

The 2018 World Cup winner did show signs of age catching up with him this season. However, the way he bounced back showed that he has still plenty left in the tank to offer. Moreover, having him within the squad, even though he might be entering his twilight years, would be a major boost for everyone in the team.

Extending his contract would also allow the club enough time to identify and sign a long-term replacement for the veteran goalkeeper.
