Tottenham interested in Sampdoria’s Ronaldo Vieira

According to a report from Italian outlet Il Secolo XIX via Sports Lens (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a potential swoop for Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira in the ongoing transfer window.

The 22-year-old Vieira came through the youth ranks at Benfica and spent time at the Whitley Bay Boys Club, Batley Phoenix and i2i Football Academy, before signing for Leeds United in 2015.

Having made his first-team debut for the Whites towards the end of the 2015/16 season, he went on to become a regular in the side. Vieira notched up 71 appearances for Leeds, scoring two goals, before joining Sampdoria in 2018 in a £7m transfer.

The midfielder did not have the best of the debut campaigns in Italy, but grew into a first-team regular in the 2019/20 campaign. Till date, he has made 44 appearances for Sampdoria, 29 of which came in the last season. He contributed with three assists in the process. (h/t Transfermarkt)

And, as per the report, Tottenham have now expressed an interest in recruiting the midfielder this summer.

We have already strengthened our midfield department this summer, with the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton.

But with Eric Dier moving to the centre-back slot, adding another midfielder as cover in the defensive midfield position might not be the worst idea.

However, currently there are more pressing concerns for Jose Mourinho & co. to contend with. Tottenham need a new striker to cover for star forward Harry Kane. A new right-back and a centre-back should also be brought in before the new season kicks off next month.

So, the interest in Vieira does come off as a bit of a surprise at the moment. It will be interesting to see if there is any truth to these speculations.
