Tottenham interested in Benfica youngster Tomas Tavares

According to a report from The Sunday People (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in signing teenage right-back Tomas Tavares from Portuguese giants Benfica.

The 19-year-old came through the youth ranks at Benfica and made his senior debut in the 2019/20 campaign. He featured 26 times for the first-team in his debut season, but failed to contribute with a goal or an assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Primarily a right-back, Tavares can also play on the opposite side of the backline. And, as per the aforementioned report, Tottenham are looking to sign him up in the summer. In fact, it is even claimed that Spurs are leading the chase to land the teenage right-back, who is also wanted by Serie A side Atalanta.

It is no secret that Tottenham are in need of a new right-back this summer. The club sold Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton earlier this month, while Serge Aurier continues to be linked with an exit. Should the Ivorian leave, manager Jose Mourinho will have no specialist right-back at his disposal.

Over the course of the last season, the manager used Japhet Tanganga at right-back. And in our first pre-season friendly against Ipswich Town this past weekend, Jose tried out on-loan midfielder Gedson Fernandes in the position.

So, it goes without saying that a new right-back is a must. However, signing Tavares might not address that concern. We need someone who could slot into the first-team right away and make a difference. The Portuguese has just one full season of senior football at best and can at the most be used as a backup, in case we do sign him.

With Mourinho at the helm, it is quite expected that we get linked with players from Portugal. But it does seem a tad unlikely that the club would move for Tavares, unless they are eyeing him as a backup option.
