Wolfsburg chief urges Wout Weghorst to snub Tottenham
The 28-year-old Weghorst has been with Wolfsburg since 2018, having joined from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar and has been a consistent performer in front of goal. Having bundled in 20 goals in the 2019/20 campaign, the Dutchman has already netted twice in three games in the new season.
Reports in Dutch media (h/t Football.london) have claimed that Tottenham are serious about making a move for the striker.
However, Wolfsburg director Schafer has urged the Netherlands international stay at the club, citing that he might not get opportunities ahead of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min at Spurs. Schafer pointed at Tottenham’s weekend win over Everton to make his case. (h/t Football.london)
“Son scored four times, Kane scored (too). So Wout should stay with us.”
Kane and Son performed brilliantly over the weekend. However, there is no viable backup in the centre-forward slot for the England captain at the moment.
Tottenham’s results suffered when Kane was injured in the last season. And given the fixture pile-up this season, going in with just him as the only option for the centre-forward role would be a recipe for disaster.

Weghorst has impressed during his time in the Bundesliga. The Dutchman has experience at the highest level and can be an able backup for Kane. However, with still three years on his contract, convincing Wolfsburg to part ways with him might prove to be a challenge.
