Tottenham interested in Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur have turned their focus towards Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger in order to strengthen the defence before the transfer window closes.

It is no secret that Tottenham are in the market for a new centre-back and have been eyeing a swoop for Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar. Technical Director Steve Hitchen was in Italy earlier this month in order to test the possibility of a summer transfer. (h/t Sky Sports)

However, given the Nerazzurri’s steep valuation of the Slovakian centre-back, the Lilywhites have turned their attention towards someone much closer to home in the form of Chelsea star Rudiger.

The 27-year-old German international has been with Chelsea since 2017, having joined from AS Roma. Having been a regular in the starting XI for his first two seasons at the club, Rudiger struggled with injuries last term.

And following the Blues’ acquisition of Thiago Silva this summer, he has fallen down the pecking order and is yet to make a single appearance for them this season. As a result, the defender is considering a loan move away in order to bolster his chances of making it to the Germany squad for the European Championships next year. (h/t Sky Sports)

This has piqued the interest of Tottenham, who need to fill the void left behind by the departure of Jan Vertonghen in July. However, Chelsea are believed to be reluctant to allow Rudiger join a direct rival on loan. (h/t Sky Sports)

Chelsea have been reluctant to do business with Tottenham in recent years. The last player who made the move from Stamford Bridge to the Lane was Carlo Cudicini back in 2009.

Rudiger, with his experience and proven pedigree at the Premier League level, would have been a handy addition for us. But, the Blues are unlikely to sanction a transfer.
