Juan Foyth pens new Tottenham Hotspur contract ahead of Villarreal loan switch

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur star Juan Foyth has penned a new contract with the club ahead of joining Villarreal on loan.

The 22-year-old moved to North London from Estudiantes in 2017. He has however failed to make a major impact and has made just 32 appearances in all competitions.

Injuries have not helped matters for the Argentine international, who has not featured since last December.

Foyth’s original deal at Spurs ran until the summer of 2022. The new deal will see him add a further 12 months to that. This should help preserve his value and the immediate future.

With him set to spend 2020/21 on loan at Villareal, Spurs ran the risk of the player returning with just a year to go on his deal. Ensuring he signed the extension is another masterclass by Daniel Levy and he has ensured we have a bargaining chip if it comes to transfer negotiations.

The loan move will come as a boon for a player who is unlikely to get the required playing time at Tottenham. The ability to regularly play at Villarreal could give him the platform to rebuild his career.

Moreover, with the Copa America set to be held next summer, it gives Foyth a fighting chance of staking a claim in the Argentina squad.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has admitted that his squad is bloated and a few players could be set for the exit.

“The transfer window in two directions and it’s possible that we could let a couple of players to leave, it’s possible we could let a couple of young players to go and experience playing.”

It has proven to be a memorable summer for Spurs. The club has brought in six key first-team players and are still in the market for Milan Skriniar.
