Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign Real Sociedad star Willian Jose

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur failed in a bid to sign Willian Jose earlier in the summer.

Bringing in a dependable backup for Harry Kane was a priority for Jose Mourinho as the window drew to a close. It would appear that Carlos Vinicius was not the club’s first choice.

A major reason for the breakdown in talks was the difference in terms. Tottenham and Marseille were both keen on the player, with us interested in taking the Brazilian on loan.

The 28-year-old was not keen on a temporary switch and wanted to move to North London on a permanent basis. Interest in the striker was high, with both West Bromwich Albion and Sevilla also bidding for his services.

This is not the first time that Spurs have been linked with a move for the Brazilian. Willian was on our radar last January as we looked for strikers following Harry Kane’s injury. (h/t Guardian)

The forward was then keen on a move to Tottenham and went as far as to withdraw from the Sociedad squad that played Espanyol in the Copa Del Rey.

From one Brazilian to another

Unfortunately for him, it is his loss as the deal has now collapsed for the second time this year. Spurs wasted no time and went on to sign Benfica ace Vinicius on loan.

The 25-year-old was the Primeira Liga top scorer last season and is prolific in front of goal. The signing was key given the difficulties we faced in Kane’s absence last season.

Vinicius joined the club initially on a season-long loan. Spurs however do have an option to make the deal permanent next summer. (h/t Evening Standard)
