Tottenham ace Steven Bergwijn sent home by Netherlands due to lack of fitness
As reported by the Daily Mail, Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn has returned to from national duty after the coaches deemed him not fit enough.
The 23-year-old was selected by manager Frank de Boer for Netherlands’ upcoming fixtures against Spain, Bosnia and Poland over the coming week.
However, upon arrival, the coaches in the national team setup have deemed that the attacker wasn’t fit enough to compete in the matches. The Dutch Football Association issued a statement confirming the same. (h/t Daily Mail)
“Steven Bergwijn has left the training camp of the Dutch national team. The Tottenham Hotspur attacker was examined by the medical staff of Oranje on Monday, upon arrival in Zeist. It turned out that he is not fit enough and that the Oranje matches must pass by.”
This comes as a strange development, considering that Bergwijn had played for Tottenham only days before in the UEFA Europa League against Ludogorets. However, it must be noted that the 23-year-old had been omitted from Spurs’ matchday squad for the Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion.
Having joined Spurs last January from PSV Eindhoven, Bergwijn made a fine impact in the second half of the last season. However, it has been a slow start to the new season for the forward. Indeed, the Dutchman has featured in just 10 matches for Tottenham so far, racking up two assists.
