Noel Whelan urges Tottenham to cash in on Erik Lamela if he is not in Mourinho’s plans

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has claimed that Tottenham should offload Erik Lamela if he is not a regular part of Jose Mourinho’s plans at the club.

The 28-year-old Argentine international has been with Tottenham since 2013, having brought in after Gareth Bale’s sale to Real Madrid. A gifted footballer with an abundance of talent, injuries haven’t really allowed the winger to quite really fulfill his immense potential.

Till date, he has racked up 232 appearances for Spurs, bagging 35 goals and 47 assists so far. However, over the course of his seven-year stint, Lamela has spent a lot of time out on the sidelines. In fact, the former AS Roma man is currently out on the treatment tables recovering from an injury.

And Whelan has claimed that if the winger isn’t going to be a regular under Jose Mourinho at the club, Tottenham would be better off cashing in on him at the earliest. (h/t Express)

While the ex-Leeds man admits that it would be a ‘catch 22’ situation considering the things can Lamela do when on song, he says having him in the side to just come off the bench and play a bit-part role isn’t worth it. (h/t Express)

“If he’s not in Jose Mourinho’s plans and they feel they want a fresher person in that position, then you do have to cash in. It’s as simple as that. If you want to get some money for him the best way would be to cash in at the end of the season.”

Lamela, for his qualities, remains an injury-prone player. With the Argentine set to enter the final year of his contract next summer, the time might be right to cut him loose.
