Noel Whelan delivers verdict on new Tottenham contract for Serge Aurier

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), former Leeds United star Noel Whelan has expressed his opinion on talks of Tottenham ace Serge Aurier getting a new contract with the club.

The 27-year-old Aurier is in the final eighteen months of his current contract with the club. Following the signing of Matt Doherty in the summer, the right-back had dropped down the pecking order at Tottenham.

Aurier has improved considerably of late

However, the Ivorian right-back has worked his way back into the starting XI, impressing with his performances against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea over the last month. This has led to talks of offering him a new contract at the club with Jose Mourinho seemingly getting the best out of him. And Whelan, addressing those rumours, has claimed that it is a shocking development, considering that there was no chance Aurier would have gotten a new deal based on his form from a few months ago. (h/t Football.london)

“Just a few months ago, you would never have seen Aurier getting a new contract. From that point of view, it’s a shock re-signing. But it also makes sense if Mourinho can get the best out of him, and that’s what we’re seeing.”

Aurier has certainly turned things around in the past couple of months. The Ivorian got a regular run of games when Doherty was tested positive for coronavirus and he hasn’t looked back since.
