Mauricio Pochettino left Tottenham in 2019
According to Football Insider (h/t The Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur will benefit financially if former manager Mauricio Pochettino takes over as the manager of Paris Saint-Germain.
The Argentine tactician spent five years at Tottenham, turning us into one of the best teams in the league. He even led us to the 2019 Champions League final, only to see Liverpool beat us for the title.
He eventually parted ways with the club after a poor start to the 2019/20 campaign and was replaced by Jose Mourinho. Pochettino has not managed a club since.
Having dismissed Thomas Tuchel, Pochettino is close to taking over as the next PSG boss. The return to management will be a boon for Spurs boss Daniel Levy.
Despite parting ways, Spurs have continued to pay Pochettino’s £8.5million-per-year salary. This was due to a payroll clause inserted in the lucrative contract he signed in 2018 to ensure his long-term future at the club.
Tottenham can cease making payments to the Argentine if he takes up another job. With him looking increasingly likely to take over in Paris, Spurs are also set to benefit.
It is not just that Pochettino who the club have been paying since last year. The Argentine’s coaching staff have also benefitted from their agreement with the club. Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino, and Toni Jimenez have all continued to receive their wages from Tottenham.
An extremely capable manager, Pochettino could turn out to be a massive capture for the Parisians. PSG have been dominant domestically but have failed to transcend it to the continental level. Having finished runners-up in the Champions League last season, they will hope Pochettino can take them one step further.
