Tottenham among Premier League clubs linked with Juventus star Merih Demiral

According to Eurosport, Tottenham are among a host of clubs from the Premier League that have been linked with a move for Juventus and Turkey centre-back Merih Demiral.

The 22-year-old started out at Turkish giants Fenerbahce and had stints at Sporting Lisbon, Alanyaspor and Sassuolo before joining Juventus last summer. However, the Turkish international endured a difficult debut season in Turin, owing to a cruciate ligament knee injury.

Having been restricted to just eight appearances in 2019/20, Demiral has once again been blighted by injury problems. And, as a result, he finds himself behind the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and Matthijs de Ligt in the pecking order. So far, the Turk has played in just 9 of Juventus’ 21 matches in all competitions.

The lack of action has led to Demiral growing frustrated, with the player worried about his chances to make the Turkey squad for the European Championships in the summer later this year. (h/t Eurosport)

This has piqued the interest of a host of clubs from England, with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Leicester all being linked. Along with the aforementioned trio, Tottenham Hotspur are also credited with an interest in the 22-year-old.

Tottenham bolstered the defensive unit in the summer with the signing of Joe Rodon from Swansea City. However, the Welshman hasn’t been given many opportunities so far this term. There have also been question marks over the future of Davinson Sanchez as well, with the Colombian open to leaving the club in January. (h/t The Athletic)

So, bringing in another centre-back in January wouldn’t be the worst idea for the club. Demiral, despite his fitness issues, is a top young defender with his best years ahead of him. Signing him would strengthen our defence while also providing us with a long-term replacement for Toby Alderweireld who is in his thirties.

Juventus, though, do not want to lose the 22-year-old Demiral. It remains to be seen if Tottenham do act upon their interest in the Turkish international.
