Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho attributes Brighton defeat to ‘sadness’ within the team
According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that his side lost to Brighton because they are suffering from ‘low self-esteem’ and ‘sadness’.
Having lost to Liverpool earlier in the week, Tottenham succumbed to a shock 1-0 defeat to Brighton, with Leandro Trossard’s first-half goal being the difference. It could have been much worse if not for Hugo Lloris and Toby Alderweireld making some crucial stops in the second half.
Going forward, Tottenham offered precious little on the night, with substitute Carlos Vinicius coming the closest wth a snapshot from the edge of the box. It was a dull and disjointed display from Mourinho’s men. The result meant the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal are making ground on us on the table.
And Mourinho, speaking after the game, claimed that the team was struggling with low self-esteem and sadness, which is stopping them from playing at their best.
“Of course now we are in a difficult moment – results, injuries and of course self-esteem. And a team with confidence is a much better team than a team suffering with sadness.”
The Portuguese added that the goal conceded only served to damage the player’s confidence further, but insisted that things will turn around.
“We did not start well and the goal . . . the team was a bit sad. My feeling was the team was a bit sad. And to concede a goal in the beginning of the game brought even more sadness and let’s say self-esteem. At this time we have all these problems that sooner or later we are going to go over them.”
🗣 "We are in a difficult moment, a team with confidence is better than a team suffering with sadness."

The absence of Harry Kane, who is out injured, was certainly felt up top. Nevertheless, with players like Son Heung-min, Tanguy Ndombele and Steven Bergwijn on the field, much better is expected from the team.
Up next is a huge derby game against Chelsea on Thursday. Failure to win there could spell further trouble for us in the race for the top four.
