Paul Merson insists Jose Mourinho must play Dele Alli as PSG deal falls through

Speaking to Sky Sports News (h/t The Metro), Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho to play Dele Alli after the midfielder failed to secure a loan switch to PSG in January.

The 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order this season and has largely played a peripheral role. Alli has made just 12 appearances this season, of which just six have come as starts. (h/t Transfermarkt)

A move to the French capital would have seen him reunite with former boss Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine was the one who transformed Alli from a prospect to a superstar and may have repeated his trick had the deal gone through.

“The lad’s got to play. On his day, he’s a special player and he’s one of the best talents in this country when he’s on his game.”

Dele Alli was rejected the opportunity to go to PSG on loan

With him set to stay at the club, Merson believes Spurs could gain from Alli’s movement. It was an aspect that was absent on the field as Mourinho’s side fell to an abject defeat against Brighton at the weekend.

With Harry Kane injured and Giovani Lo Celso also available, much of the onus on the attack fell onto Son Heung-Min. The South Korean, despite his best efforts, is only one man.

“I watched Tottenham last night and how he doesn’t get in that team at the moment is beyond me. I don’t know what goes on at the training ground, but he has to play in that team – especially with Harry Kane injured.”

Has got to play!

Dele Alli can be a difference-maker for Tottenham Hotspur

Merson believes Alli is a  good finisher and could have made the difference against Brighton. With Spurs set to play Chelsea next, it remains to be seen if the midfielder will be given the nod. It makes little sense for us not to use Alli as long as he is at the club. It makes little sense for us to have not loaned him out if we weren’t planning on using him.

“I feel for the lad as he has got the chance to play for PSG – a massive club – and he wants to play. Spurs are saying they need to replace him… but they might as well take me if he’s going to just sit on the bench for the next three or four months!”

With a number of matches still to come, Alli may still have a chance to reignite his Tottenham career. A proven match-winner on his day, it would be foolish of us not to make use of all the resources at our disposal.
