Dimitar Berbatov delivers verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s top-four chances

Speaking to Betfair (h/t Football.london), former Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov has claimed that the Lilywhites can still finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Having been league leaders at one point last season, Jose Mourinho & co. have endured a drastic fall from grace over the past couple of months. Following the humbling 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out, Spurs are now ninth in the league standings, fighting to hang on to hopes of a top-four finish.

Berbatov, however, is claiming that should his former club string together a run of good results, they can become contenders for a top-four spot once again, given how close things are in the table points-wise.

“Some people are saying that Spurs’ best chance of getting Champions League football next season is winning this year’s Europa League.

“But if you look at the league table, Spurs are six points off the top four and if they go on a good run they could still be up there come the end of the season, but only if they are consistent and they pick up the points and other teams drop a few.”

Indeed, the gap between Tottenham and fourth-placed Chelsea is only six points. With still 15 games left to be played, that gap is certainly scalable. However, as Berbatov adds, for that to happen, Mourinho’s troops need to be extremely consistent.

Tottenham have lost five of their last six games in all competitions. The performances have been nowhere near the desired level. All that needs to change if the club is to have the hope of playing Champions League football next season.
