Jamie Carragher aims a dig at Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho

Speaking on Sky Sports MNF (h/t Daily Star), Jamie Carragher has taken a slight jab at Jose Mourinho. This comes after the goalless draw between Chelsea and Manchester United as Carragher drew comparisons between that and Mourinho’s spell in charge of Manchester United.

Manchester United have been a disaster against the big-six this season, scoring just one goal (a penalty) in seven games.

With United producing another 0-0 against the traditional ‘big six’, Carragher went on to take a pop at Mourinho.

”Well listen, if someone like Jose Mourinho had those results… We were very critical of him on this show as a Manchester United manager. When we talk about going for it, I think there’s a difference between what you do with the ball and what you do off the ball. And when we criticised Jose in the past, it was almost like when they didn’t have the ball, it was a back six. It was really deep.”

Carragher praised Man United for their display though.

“I think this was one of the bravest and most on the front foot I’ve seen Manchester United without the ball. I thought they were very brave in this game. I thought they were very brave on the front foot, pressing, man to man all over the pitch. But in that final third, they just didn’t have that quality.”

This jibe at Mourinho is unlikely to go down well with the fans but there is some truth to what the former defender said. More often than not, Jose Mourinho set up Manchester United in an ultra-defensive manner during his time at the club.

Even at Spurs, he has taken a similar approach, sitting deep and trying to play on the counter. After a bad run of games, Spurs are finally looking better in recent games. They are still in the hunt for a top-four place and face Fulham next in the league.
