Aston Villa in talks with Ezri Konsa amid Tottenham interest
According to the Mirror, Aston Villa are holding negotiations with star defender Ezri Konsa over a new contract amid interest in his services from Tottenham and Liverpool.
A product of the Charlton Athletic academy, Konsa earned his spurs with the Addicks before rising to prominence in the EFL Championship with Brentford. The summer of 2019 saw Aston Villa splash £12m to sign him up after having earned a promotion to the Premier League.
Since arriving at the Villa Park, Konsa has gradually grown into a key player for Dean Smith’s side and has been an ever-present at the heart of the defence this season. His growth with the Midlands’ outfit has led to interest from Tottenham Hotspur as well as Liverpool.
While the Reds’ defensive problems are no secret, Tottenham, too, could use some fresh additions in the centre-half department even though Joe Rodon was signed last summer. Toby Alderweireld is in his thirties and has needed to have his game-time managed this term while Eric Dier hasn’t been good enough.
Davinson Sanchez, despite his recent improvements, remains inconsistent. So, bringing in a new centre-back like Konsa, who has had two years of PL football under his belt and has proven himself capable at this level would be a smart move.
And, in order to stave off this interest from both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, Aston Villa are planning to reward the 23-year-old with a new contract, even though his current deal runs for two more years.
