Danny Mills thinks Jose Mourinho could strengthen Tottenham Hotspur by signing 1-2 new defenders

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Premier League defender, Danny Mills, stated that Jose Mourinho could bring in defenders at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer at the expense of Toby Alderweireld.

The Portuguese manager has changed the centre-back pairing a few times this season. Davinson Sanchez, young Joe Rodon, Toby Alderweireld, and Eric Dier have all played in that position several times.

The Belgian centre-back and Sanchez seem to be Mourinho’s preferred pairing at the moment. But Mills still believes that Alderweireld might not stay past this season at Tottenham.

And instead, he believes, Mourinho would be looking to strengthen the defensive pairing. Mills mentions that the centre-back pairing is a vital part of any Mourinho team and he could make new signings in that department.

“Alderweireld, is next season going to be a season too far for him?… We know that with Jose, his centre-back pairings have always been the key. If Mourinho’s still there next season he’ll be looking to strengthen that centre-back pairing by either one or two new players.”

Reinforcements on the cards?

And the former Manchester City and Leeds United man is right in his belief that Mourinho hasn’t had a trusted centre-back pairing at Tottenham this season.

Currently, Sanchez has started at the back alongside Alderweireld and has featured in 3 straight wins for the club.

And before that, it was Dier, while Sanchez used to warm the bench. It always helps to have a settled defensive duo at the back that gets regular playing time alongside each other.

Spurs still have the joint third-best defensive record in the league so far this season. Nevertheless, if the club could add world-class defenders in the upcoming windows, then it would certainly guide them close to challenging for trophies.
