Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho hailed as a ‘winner’ by former Chelsea ace Michael Essien

Speaking on The Football Ramble (h/t Daily Mail), former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has hailed current Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho for his winning mentality.

Mourinho has had an illustrious career in football management. Having tasted European glory with FC Porto, the Portuguese arrived on English shores in 2004, taking over the reins at Chelsea.

In a little over three years, the manager built one of the most solid teams ever in Premier League history at Stamford Bridge, taking them to great heights. Following that he had successful stints at Inter Milan, Real Madrid before returning to Chelsea for another spell.

And following a stint at Manchester United which didn’t end all too well, Mourinho took over at Tottenham in November 2019, replacing Mauricio Pochettino who was given the sack.

Essien, who was one of Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants during his first stint at Chelsea and also played under him at Real Madrid, has hailed the Portuguese for his winning mentality and attention to detail.

“He’s a winner, he gives you tactical details and makes sure it’s very clear so when you’re on the pitch you know what to do.”

The former Chelsea midfielder then went on to add that he wishes to emulate the same methods that Mourinho followed in his managerial career.

“It’s one of the things I am going to carry with me and hopefully I can transmit to the boys if one day I become a manager.”

Unfortunately for Mourinho, he hasn’t been able to emulate that success at Tottenham still. Last week saw us crash out of the Europa League while the Premier League title race was out of the question since the turn of the year. The only hope of a trophy now is the Carabao Cup, where we face Man City in the finals next month.
