Tottenham target Jannik Vestergaard addresses transfer speculations
Speaking to Tispbladet (h/t Daily Mail), Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard has reacted to speculations surrounding his future amidst transfer links to Tottenham Hotspur.
Vestergaard, 28, has been with Southampton since 2018, having arrived from German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach. Over the past couple of seasons, the Danish centre-back has gradually grown into a pillar at the back for the Saints.
Vestergaard was particularly impressive in the first half of the ongoing campaign when Southampton had emerged as potential challengers for a top-four finish. While his form has endured a slight decline, along with that of the team, the 28-year-old has done enough to attract interest from the likes of Tottenham.
Spurs are in need of a new centre-back after Eric Dier has endured an indifferent season while Toby Alderweireld isn’t getting any younger. Davinson Sanchez may have been impressive of late, but has shown previously that he can be very erratic and inconsistent whereas Joe Rodon lacks the requisite experience at this level.
So, a new centre-back will be a welcome addition for Tottenham in the summer. And someone like Vestergaard, who has proven himself in the Premier League and is entering the peak years of his career can be a solid addition.
Now, addressing the rumours of a potential move to Spurs, the Danish international has said that it is good to learn that his efforts on the field are being recognised. But he insisted that he was pretty relaxed over his future.
“I can only say that of course it’s always a pat on the back with stories of interest from other big clubs. But right now I have a contract with Southampton so, it’s not something I can talk about.”

Vestergaard will be entering the final year of his contract with Southampton in a couple of months. Last summer, Tottenham made a major coup with the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from the Saints on a cut-price deal. Another similar transfer could become a possibility if Vestergaard does not sign a new deal with the South Coast club.
