Transfer News: Tottenham ‘closely monitoring’ Ligue 1 star Florian Thauvin

According to Spanish news outlet Estadio Deportivo (h/t Leicestershire Live), Tottenham Hotspur are closely monitoring the situation of Marseille winger Florian Thauvin, who is a transfer target for Leicester City as well.

Thauvin, 28, came through the ranks at FC Grenoble and had stints at Bastia, Lille and Marseille before he ended up in the Premier League with Newcastle United in 2015.

However, having failed to make the kind of impact that was expected, the winger returned to Marseille in January 2016, on loan initially before making the transfer permanent eighteen months later in the summer of 2017. Since then, the 28-year-old has thrived in France and was part of the squad that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Thauvin has had an impressive 2020/21 campaign, in which he has produced a return of eight goals and nine assists from 37 appearances across all competitions. However, with his contract up for expiry at the end of the season, the Frenchman’s future at Marseille has come under question.

Thauvin’s potential availability in the summer transfer window for a free transfer has alerted Tottenham, who are said to be keeping close tabs on the wide man. However, Spurs will be facing competition from fellow Premier League rivals Leicester, who have already made a four-year contract offer worth €3.5 million per season.

Apart from Tottenham and Leicester, there is also interest from Serie A with the likes of Napoli and AS Roma closely following the developments.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

With Gareth Bale set to depart at the end of the season when his loan deal expires, Tottenham could certainly use another quality wide player who can operate out on the right flank. And Thauvin, given his experience and free agency, would be a smart addition to the ranks despite his past failed stint in England.

But with Leicester already making an offer for him, Spurs have their task cut out to clinch his signing.
