Transfer News: Tottenham could lose out to AC Milan in Mike Maignan race

According to Italian news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Sempre Milan), Tottenham are facing the prospect of losing out to AC Milan in the transfer race for LOSC Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Maignan is a product of the PSG academy but moved to Lille in 2015 in search of first-team opportunities. Till date the 24-year-old has racked up 172 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, keeping 60 clean sheets.

Having grown into one of the most impressive goalkeepers in France, Maignan has emerged as a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are in the market for a new goalkeeper as the club eyes a long-term replacement for captain Hugo Lloris, who is entering the final year of his contract. (h/t Express)

However, Tottenham are set to face competition in the race to land Maignan, with AC Milan also keen on landing the France international. The Rossoneri could be in need of a new No. 1 heading into the new season as Gianluigi Donnarumma is in the final few months of his contract.

While Milan’s top priority is to try and renew his deal, they are also preparing for the eventuality that it does not happen. To that end, Maignan has emerged as their top target to replace the Italian international.

And, it is now being claimed that they might have an edge over Tottenham in the race for the transfer of Maignan. This is because Milan’s owners, Elliott Management, have an excellent relationship with Lille, having supported them with a loan a few years back.

Add to it, Milan would also be able to offer Champions League football to Maignan next term, something that might not be the case at Tottenham. So, it may end up that Spurs lose out to Milan in pursuit of the Frenchman.
