Transfer News: Tottenham line up a summer move for Nikola Maksimovic
According to news from Torino Granata (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are warming up to the possibility of securing the transfer of Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic in the summer.
The 29-year-old has been playing in Italy since 2013 when he made the switch to Torino from Serbian outfit Red Star Belgrade. After three years, the defender joined Napoli and has grown into a reliable squad member for the Partenopei.
Till date, he has made 99 appearances for the Naples outfit, scoring and assisting two goals apiece. The 29-year-old has 25 caps for the Serbian national team. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Maksimovic is in the final few months of his contract with Napoli and the chances of him signing an extension are said to be close to zero. His potential availability on a free transfer has alerted the likes of Inter Milan as well as Tottenham Hotspur. (h/t Sport Witness)
Reports of Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Maksimovic first surfaced in January earlier this year. Heading into the summer transfer window, a new central defender is set to be a priority for Jose Mourinho once again given how our backline has performed this term.
None of the centre-backs, be it Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez or Eric Dier, have been consistent enough. Joe Rodon, who arrived in the summer, hasn’t been given a lot of opportunities by the manager. So, bringing in a new centre-back could be the right thing to do before heading into the new season.

And while Maksimovic might not be the biggest of names, the 29-year-old is vastly experienced and will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season. To that end, the club are now said to be warming up to the idea of securing his transfer. (h/t Sport Witness)
It, however, remains to be seen if a deal does see the light of the day.
