Transfer News: Tottenham to battle Barcelona for Jerome Boateng
According to German news publication BILD (h/t Express), Tottenham are interested in a transfer for Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng but face competition from La Liga giants Barcelona.
Boateng, 32, has had a long and decorated career with Bayern Munich having joined them from Premier League side Manchester City in 2011. During his time in Bavaria, the German international has won a huge amount of trophies, including two Champions League titles.
However, his contract expires at the end of the season and Bayern Munich director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed that the club will not be offering him an extension, meaning Boateng will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season. (h/t Express)
“Jerome’s contract expires in the summer. It will not be extended. That was a joint decision of the club management and the coach was also involved. I explained that to Jerome and he was very understanding. He leaves through a big door – hopefully with titles.”
This development has alerted Tottenham Hotspur, who are intent on bolstering the defensive options in the upcoming summer transfer window. However, the report goes on to add that Tottenham will face competition from Barcelona for the free transfer of Boateng. (h/t Express)
However, Tottenham may have the edge of the Catalan giants due to Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician is a long-term admirer of Boateng and tried to sign him during his time at Manchester United. While a move did not materialise, Boateng had revealed that the interest meant a lot to him. (h/t Express)
“I told him that his interest was an honour for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me.”

Boateng, at 32 doesn’t have a lot of years at the highest level. During this season, the German has shown signs of slowing down. While his experience and winning mentality would make him an asset, a move might not be in the best interest of Tottenham.
