Transfer News: Tottenham interested in AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli

According to Spanish transfer news website Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur are among a number of clubs interested in signing AC Milan defender and captain Alessio Romagnoli in the summer.

The 26-year-old Romagnoli has been with AC Milan since 2015, having arrived from AS Roma and has grown into one of the most solid and reliable centre-backs in Serie A. A mainstay at the back for the majority of his spell at San Siro, the centre-back was made the club captain at the onset of the 2019/20 season.

However, Romagnoli has lost his place in the starting XI in recent weeks owing to injuries and the emergence of Fikayo Tomori, who has done very well since joining on loan from Chelsea. (h/t Fichajes)

As a result, the Italian international is said to be unhappy in Milan. And with his contract expiring in a year, Romagnoli could be set for a transfer in the upcoming window. And this has led to interest from a host of clubs including the likes of Juventus, Barcelona, Manchester United as well as Tottenham. (h/t Fichajes)

Having lost Jan Vertonghen last summer, Tottenham don’t have a left-footed centre-back in the squad. In addition to that Toby Alderweireld isn’t getting any younger, while Eric Dier has had an up and down season as well. ‘

So, a transfer move for someone like Romagnoli, who is entering the prime years of his career and has loads of experience at the top level makes a lot of sense for Tottenham.

However, the report adds that the likes of Juventus and Barcelona may have an upper hand in the race to sign the 26-year-old. While he would undoubtedly be a fine acquisition for Tottenham, a move seems unlikely this summer.
