Gareth Southgate emerges as genuine contender for Tottenham job

According to Eurosport, Gareth Southgate has emerged as a genuine contender for the managerial role at Tottenham. Apparently, he is the alternative shortlisted by the club in case they fail to get Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig.

Tottenham relieved Jose Mourinho of his managerial duties this past Monday following the 2-2 draw against Everton on Friday night. The result had left Tottenham in the seventh place, staring at the possibility of missing out on a top-four finish.

While Daniel Levy has appointed ex-midfielder Ryan Mason on an interim basis till the end of the season, the search for a new manager has started. The likes of Julian Nagelsmann are being eyed for next season. However, with the Leipzig manager being wanted by Bayern and not to mention super expensive to prise away, Spurs have lined up an alternative in Gareth Southgate.

Southgate has done a fine job with the England national team, impressing in the 2018 World Cup as well as the Three Lions’ qualifying campaigns for Euros and the Nations League. He has previously stated his desire to return to club management at some point and his relationship with Tottenham star Harry Kane could make him an appealing candidate.

The prospect of Southgate taking over the managerial reigns is definitely an interesting prospect but the fact remains that he has not managed at the club level since 2009. Yes, his good work with England must be acknowledged but international football is vastly different from club football. It will be interesting to see if Levy goes after Southgate as an alternative to Nagelsmann.
