Transfer News: Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld not considering Club Brugge move

According to news outlet Voetbal24 (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has turned down a transfer to Belgian outfit Club Brugge.

The Belgian giants were hoping to raid Tottenham for the transfer of Alderweireld this summer. It is said that Club Brugge were keen on capitalising the defender’s lack of minutes this season, while comments made in private about how he did not wish to play abroad much longer, gave them further encouragement. As a result, the Belgian outfit made an approach to Alderweireld to explore the possibility of a transfer in the upcoming transfer window. However, their approach has been shot down by the veteran centre-back who is ‘currently not open’ to a transfer. (h/t Sport Witness)

The report goes on to claim that now that Mourinho has been sacked from the Tottenham manager’s post, Alderweireld wants to stay put and try to become a regular in the starting XI once again. The defender is confident that he is good enough to play at this level and only when he feels otherwise, will he think about a transfer.

Alderweireld has been with Tottenham Hotspur since 2015, having signed from La Liga club Atletico Madrid. During his time at the club, the 32-year-old has racked up 230 appearances, in which he has nine goals and five assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

At 32, the Belgian is entering the final phase of his career but still has plenty left to offer.

His experience and leadership can come in handy for the team while giving him a regular run in the side should enable him to perform consistently as well. So, it is good news that Alderweireld has turned down a transfer to his homeland.
