Transfer News: Sheffield United boss has a defiant Sander Berge stance amid Tottenham Hotspur links

Speaking in an interview (h/t The Star), interim Sheffield United boss, Paul Heckingbottom, stated that the club is not ‘obliged’ to sell Sander Berge despite interest from clubs like Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blades are guaranteed to drop down to the Championship after their relegation was confirmed last weekend. As for Sander Berge, he is yet to feature for his side since a hamstring injury against Manchester United in December 2020.

And Heckingbottom, who is not the club’s permanent manager as of now, is still defiant in the face of transfer talks regarding Sander Berge leaving.

The Norwegian, who is capped 24 times by his country already, is the second-most expensive signing in Blades’ history. United paid £22m to Genk for him some 15 months ago and are said to value him more than that now.

Sheffield stay defiant

Both Spurs and Arsenal have been encouraged to make bids for the 23-year-old, but Heckingbottom has reminded everyone that Berge is still very much under Sheffield Unted’s contract.

“Sander hasn’t spoken about the future. If he is here, that will be out of my hands. But I’m expecting him (to remain with United), yes. He’s contracted to us, don’t forget that, and what a player he would be to help us get back.”

Spurs have a pretty stacked midfield right now with Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all sharing game-time amongst each other.

Berge is a very exciting talent and is just 23 years old, but if Spurs miss out on him, it would not be the end of the world for them.

And after Heckingbottom’s comments, they would now know that the path to signing the Norwegian might not be totally clear.
