Transfer News: Tottenham leading Liverpool in Matthias Ginter pursuit

According to transfer news from German publication BILD (h/t Caught Offside), Tottenham Hotspur are leading Premier League rivals Liverpool in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.

Having come through the youth ranks at SC Freiburg, Ginter broke into the first-team in the early parts of the last decade before sealing a transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2014. Having spent three years with the Black and Yellows, the 27-year-old signed for Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2017.

Ginter, since then, has been a regular fixture in the backline for the Die Fohlen, racking up 147 appearances in which he has scored ten goals and set up five more. The German defender has featured in 45 matches across all competitions in the ongoing campaign for Gladbach, netting two goals. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Ginter, though, is entering the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga outfit, leading to speculations over his future ahead of the summer transfer window. And, it seems like the 27-year-old could be on his way to the Premier League in the summer with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool showing an interest. (h/t Caught Offside)

Tottenham are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements given how inconsistent Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have been over the course of the season. Add in Toby Alderweireld’s advancing age and Joe Rodon yet to carve out a place in the side, someone like Ginter, who has plenty of experience at the highest level, and is in his peak years at 27, could be a shrewd purchase.

The report claims that the centre-back is valued at around £30m and Tottenham have already taken a lead over Liverpool by making an offer for the German.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

It goes without saying that we will need to bring in at least one new centre-back this summer. And, Ginter could prove to be a good addition when one considers his age, experience and valuation. It remains to be seen if there is any truth the claims that Tottenham have indeed made an offer for the 27-year-old.
