Eight men arrested after racist abuse against unnamed Tottenham player

According to football.london, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed that eight arrests have been made following racist abuse made against an unnamed Tottenham Hotspur footballer. In addition, four other men were interviewed under caution as part of the Metropolitan Police’s nationwide action against racist behaviour.

The investigation kicked off after Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min was subjected to online racist abuse after the team’s loss to Manchester United earlier this year.

The Red Devils, after detecting the abuse through their online reporting tool, handed out bans to the supporters in question and alerted the Greater Manchester Police over the matter.

Following on after that the Met Police has now made as many as eight arrests, with Sergeant Detective Matt Simpson issuing a statement after the same. (h/t football.london)

“This action makes it abundantly clear that police will not stand for racist thuggery, even if it is committed online. The posts, all of which were on Twitter, were vulgar and were utterly unacceptable. There is no safe haven for this type of abusive behaviour, and we are committed to taking decisive action to root it out.

“With a busy summer of football approaching we are committed to driving out this type of racist behaviour – it has no place in football. I am delighted with the support we have received from our policing colleagues nationally and from Manchester United and Tottenham. Without them, it would be difficult to identify these users and take action.”

Tottenham are yet to make any statement following the arrests that have been made.

It is good to see that action is being taken against those who were involved in the vile behaviour. There is no space for racism in the beautiful game of football, nor anywhere else in the society.
