Transfer News: Pep Guardiola says Barcelona move is ‘close’ for Sergio Aguero amid Tottenham links

Speaking on Match of the Day (h/t Sky Sports), Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola dropped a major hint that Sergio Aguero, who has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur recently, is close to joining Barcelona.

Earlier this month, Spurs were one of the clubs touted to be in contention for the Argentine. But those links are going cold every passing day.

The 32-year-old will leave Manchester City as a free agent once this season concludes as his contract is expiring. And Guardiola’s comments have all but confirmed that Aguero will don the Barcelona jersey next season.

“Maybe I reveal a secret. Maybe he is close to agreeing a deal for the club of my heart – for Barcelona. He is going to be playing alongside the best player of all time, Messi.

Aguero is Barca-bound

Despite his injuries and lack of game-time this season, Aguero still remains one of the best strikers in the country. That potency was on display against Everton on Sunday when he scored twice after coming off the bench.
He would have made for a great striker to pair up top with Harry Kane or would have been a great short-term solution for Spurs if Kane was not at the club next season. But it looks like Spurs fans can now forget about Aguero.

The club’s focus should now shift to keeping their best players such as Son Heung-min and Kane. The squad is brimming with talent and apart from the number 9 position, there seems to be ample depth everywhere.

If Kane is at N17 next season, then missing out on the Argentine would not sting a lot of fans. But if the club loses their talisman, and fails to replace him properly, then it could be a very long season ahead for The Lilywhites.
