Transfer News: Tottenham target Gregor Kobel set to join Borussia Dortmund

According to news from reputed journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Gregor Kobel, who had been linked with a move to Tottenham, is set to sign for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Kobel spent the formative years of his footballing career in Switzerland before making the switch to Germany in 2014 when he signed for TSG Hoffenheim. During his time with the club, the goalkeeper had a loan spell away at FC Augsburg before he signed for VfB Stuttgart in 2019, initially on loan before making the transfer permanent in the summer last year.

Since then, the 23-year-old has made 65 appearances for Stuttgart, keeping 17 clean sheets in the process. The Switzerland goalkeeper ended the 2020/21 campaign as one of the brightest goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, which ended up landing him on the radars of Tottenham Hotspur. (h/t Express)

Indeed, Tottenham were said to be looking at the Swiss custodian as a long-term replacement for captain and first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. At 34, the Frenchman is very much in the final phase of his career at the highest level. In addition, he is entering the last year of his contract with the club as well, leading to speculations over his future. (h/t Express)

Kobel, to that end, would have been a handy replacement for Lloris given the season he has had at Stuttgart. However, Romano has now claimed that the 23-year-old is instead on the verge of sealing a transfer to another Bundesliga club, with Borussia Dortmund set to sign him.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Lloris, over the past couple of years, has been rather inconsistent and has, at times, showed signs of age catching up with him. So, bringing in a long-term replacement for the Frenchman makes total sense for the club. However, it seems like Kobel won’t be the one joining Spurs this summer.
