Newcastle tipped to sign exit-bound Tottenham star Danny Rose
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Chronicle Live), former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has backed Newcastle United to make a move for Tottenham star Danny Rose who will soon be a free agent.
Rose’s time at Tottenham is fast drawing to a close with his contract set to run out in less than a month. And the club confirmed last week that he will be on his way out when the deal does expire, thus bringing an end to a 14-year-old partnership.
During his time at Tottenham, Rose grew into one of the best left-backs in the country, although the past couple of years were difficult for the Englishman. Fitness issues saw him drop behind Ben Davies in the pecking order while frosty relations with Mauricio Pochettino and his successor, Jose Mourinho, did not help his cause either.
In fact, Rose did not play a single game for Tottenham in 2020/21, having been exiled to train with the reserves. Prior to that, the 30-year-old had spent the second half of the 2019/20 term on loan at Newcastle, after his falling out with Jose. And while he didn’t exactly set the stage alight, the former England international gave a decent account of himself at St. James’ Park.
And, now that is soon to become a free agent, McLeish has backed the Magpies to take a gamble on him in the upcoming transfer window.
“Rose is a great player. In fact, Newcastle fans actually would love Danny Rose to go back. With Danny, it’s does he love football? He spoke about: ‘I’ll just walk away and retire then,’ last year when he was maybe in the huff a wee bit. But what a good player Newcastle would get on a free transfer. Incredible.”

Rose has been a great servant for Tottenham over the years, despite his recent situation. And while he may not have played at the highest level last season, at 30, he still has plenty left to offer and can prove a wise addition for Newcastle, who have had problems in the left-back position.
Whether Steve Bruce & co. heed McLeish’s advice and move for Rose, remains to be seen.
